Why Portable Ac Unit Show Two BTU Numbers (and Which One Is Real)
If you've shopped for a portable air conditioner, you've probably seen listings quote something like "10,000 BTU (ASHRAE) / 6,000 BTU (SACC)." Those aren't a typo or a range. They're two different measurements of the same unit, but only one of them tells you how well it will actually cool your room.
The Short Version
Size your room by the SACC number (the smaller one). The bigger ASHRAE number is measured in a way that ignores real-world losses, so it overstates what a portable can actually do, often by 30 to 40 percent. A "10,000 BTU" portable frequently performs like a 6,000 BTU one in your actual room.
Why the Two Numbers Are so Far Apart:
The gap isn't marketing spin from one brand. It's built into how portable air conditioners physically work, and it's the reason they've earned a reputation for underperforming.
A typical single-hose portable cools by pulling in room air, removing heat from some of it, and blowing the hot air out through the exhaust hose. But all that exhausted air has to be replaced. As the unit pushes air out, it lowers the pressure in the room, and warm, unconditioned air gets pulled back in from hallways, gaps around doors, and leaky windows. So the unit spends part of its effort cooling a steady stream of new warm air it effectively invited in.
On top of that, the whole machine sits inside the room you're cooling. Its hot components and that warm exhaust hose radiate some heat right back into the space. A window unit avoids both problems: its hot half hangs outside, and it isn't depressurizing the room. That's why window units don't have this same gap between their rated and real capacity.
What ASHRAE and SACC Actually Measure:
ASHRAE is the older, higher number. It's measured under idealized lab conditions that don't account for the infiltration and self-heating losses above. It's closer to the raw cooling the compressor can produce than to what you'll feel in your room.
SACC stands for Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity. The U.S. Department of Energy made it the required standard in 2017 specifically because the ASHRAE figure was overstating real-world performance across the whole category. SACC factors in the air that leaks back in, the heat gained through the hose and unit, and realistic temperature conditions. It's the honest, apples-to-apples number, and it's the one to shop by.
How to Use This When You Buy:
When you compare portables, ignore the big ASHRAE number and line units up by their SACC rating. Then size your room to that figure. If a unit only advertises the large ASHRAE number and hides the SACC one, treat that as a small red flag on its own - the honest listings show both.
This is one of the most common ways shoppers get burned on cooling: buying a "10,000 BTU" portable, sizing a room to that number, and then wondering why it never gets cold. It never gets cold because it was never a 10,000 BTU unit where it counts.
Note: While they still lose some efficiency due to their portable nature, dual-hose units lose much less of that ASHRAE BTU. Not as common, but they do exist.
